April 12 Memorial Postponed

Hello Friends, David's memorial celebration was scheduled for April 12, but due to Gov. Brown's order regarding coronavirus concerns, Sam Bond's will be closed for at least a month, forcing cancellation of the event. It will take some time before another date can be booked. In the meantime, health and blessings to all!

From Kelani Larsen

About a year ago, I was passing Imagine hair salon with my young child. I heard someone screaming my name in a Jersey accent. When I turned, it was a total stranger yelling, but behind him was David giggling. David had convinced his client to come yell for me in our signature accent. This is part of the unique magic that is David Wilson. He instigates others beyond their norm to do the silliest things.

Happening Person: DAVID WILSON - Eugene Weekly 2/24/12

Born in Utah to a Mormon father and a Brazilian mother, David Wilson spent his boyhood in several South American cities, where his dad taught English to foreign diplomats for the U.S. Foreign Service. “It was a phenomenal upbringing,” he says. Having survived civil strife in La Paz and a earthquake in Caracas, Wilson went to high school in Junction City and Bible college in Portland before he found Eugene and came out as gay in 1976. “I was born on the same day as Eugene, Oct. 17,” he says. “I love the people here. I’ve kept the party alive.” Wilson has styled hair since his 1981 graduation from the Creative Institute of Design. “I’ve had some clients since beauty school,” he says. A flutist since age 7, he played with Americanistan in the 1990s. “We played the gypsy stage at the Country Fair,” he notes. “It was like Carnegie Hall for me.” His current guise is Orbital Disco Dave in the free-form trio LaunchPad. He was hospitalized for six days by an infection in August, and is recovering gradually. A benefit concert to help with medical costs is set for 9 pm Friday, Oct. 12, at Sam Bond’s Garage.

Nothing like a good birthday and party.

One of the most memorable was a celebration with 14 friends for dinner at Mazzi's for David's 30th birthday and then 30 years later his 60th birthday party at Blair Alley in the Whit. People have always been drawn to David, as he is such a kind and fun loving guy and was my partner for 12 years in the 1970s and 1980s. I took these pictures at David's 60th birthday at Blair Alley October 17, 2015. A group of his friends organized the surprise party, and David has always loved being the center of attention. It was such a great evening of chatting with old friends as well as dancing.

From Violette Grace

I met David when we worked together at Northwest College of Beauty. I was immediately obsessed with this cosmic creature and knew we'd hit it off famously. I worked a later shift and sometimes David would run out to grab me as he saw me walking across the way to the building to have me help him out of some sticky situation with a client. "BIANCA YOU HAVE TO HELP ME!! THIS OLD LADY IS MAD AT ME AND I HAVE TO GET AWAY!" it was NEVER a dull day with David!! There were endless puns, mustard packs and Taco Bell hot sauce packs to be hidden, spontaneous dance parties, tons of inspiration and always laughter. The impact David has made on so many of those students' lives is unimaginable. David connected with so many people and influenced and inspired creativity and confidence. The hair community in this town wouldn't be what it was without David. We all cherish him!!!! He pushed people beyond their comfort zones, made them look at hair in so many different ways, sparked creativity, built solid skills, and made them feel like they mattered.

I had just moved to to Eugene from Portland when I started working at the beauty school and working with David made me feel like less of a stranger in this strange town. We could talk endlessly about music ("BIANCA I HAVE THAT ON VINYL!") and I was so stoked to discover that he had a band and that he played the flute! I remember one company holiday party where David brought his flute and played it as he roamed around in between the tables. It was glorious.
Never in my life have I met anyone like David and I thank my lucky stars for all of the crazy and great times we've shared.

In the late 80's David used to come to our house and cut the hair of the three of us, me, my significant other Dennis, and our 4 year old son L.T. who loved the spiky haircut that David gave him (with a tail, of course).
